Introduction
Mahindra XUV 300 is a sub 4-metre compact SUV launched in Feb 2019 in India. It is based on SsangYong Tivoli developed by Mahindra & SsangYong in collaboration. This is a different car because it is not like other cars in the competition which are based on hatchback platform and are beefed up to call compact SUV. XUV300 is based on the platform which is originally a compact SUV. This thing makes it step ahead of the competition. Mahindra has already a rugged and tough compact SUV the TUV 300. But the competition was about features and comfort so Mahindra answered by XUV300. It rivals Hyundai Venue, Ford Ecosport, Tata Nexon, Suzuki Vitara Breeza. Let's see what Mahindra offers us.
Engine & Transmission
XUV 3OO is the most powerful car in the segment, with leading torque figures. It is available in two engine options. One is a 1.2 L turbo-charged, inline 3-cylinder,DOHC petrol engine generating 110 bhp and 200 Nm of max torque. There is a 1.5L turbocharged inline 4-cylinder DOHC diesel engine producing 115 bhp of max power and class leading 300Nm of max torque. The power figures are way ahead than the competition making it most powerful car in the segment. The petrol engine is mated to manual transmission while the diesel engine is mated to 6 speed manual transmission and 6 speed autoShift transmission. For taking manual control over the automatic the gear selector can be moved up and down. The only disappointment for me is that the car is only available in Front Wheel Drive and not even AWD as an option.Exteriors
As the name says XUV 3OO it signifies that this is the younger sibling of the XUV 5OO, So some of the design cues and elements resembles it. Starting from the front, we get a cheetah inspired front grill which is a scaled version of what we have seen in latest 5OO. There are six vertical chrome bars which Mahindra logo in centre, which are a part of Mahindra design language since beginning. To the side of grill, there are projector headlamp setup with LED DRLs. DRLs have been uniquely designed and extends to the bumper as well. On the bumper we get halogen fog lamp setup with black cladding housing it. The bumper also features our horizontal chrome strips which brings in the air for inter-cooler. Lower down bumper there is aluminium finished bash plate with plastic cladding on the sides. This black cladding runs to the wheel arches and the side of the car and to the rear bumper to give that rugged SUV appeal. On the side we get 17 inch diamond cut alloy wheels wrapped in 215/55 R17 tires. It gets the lass leading wheelbase at 2600mm. The A, B And C pillars are blackened out to give us a floating roof line. The roof can be even opted for white colour with red and aquamarine colour as an optional package. The ORVMs are electronic retractable and has turn indicators on them as well. The lower half of ORVMs is finished in black. There are roof rails and a shark fin antenna.
Moving to the rear, the small glass area and a sculpted tail gate makes it muscular. The tail lamp are split unit with unique teardrop design. The brake light is located on the top. Rear bumper is black plastic with metal bash plate on the rear as well. Bumper also houses the rear fog lamps.
Interiors
The interior of XUV 3OO is a dual-tone beige and black leatherette upholstery. The dual tone dashboard is enhanced with satin silver and piano black inserts. We get a 3 spoke steering wheel with steering mounted controls finished in leather with silver accents. Left side lies the audio controls and cruise controls on the right. The instrument cluster is analogue unit with LCD MID. The dials looks sporty with tachometer on left, speedometer on right, MID in centre and tell-tale lights all over. The MID has some first in class features like the wheel positioning sensor which shows real time position of the front wheel and steering modes as well. The push button start is placed on the left below the instrument cluster. 
Moving further, there is a 7 inch touchscreen infotainment display with Android Auto and Apple Carplay and Mahindra's own BlueSense Connectivity as well. The display is mounted between two vertical AC vents. The vents are finished in piano black with satin silver surrounds. Below the touch screen lies the control for Automatic Air-Conditioner. We get first in class Dual-Zone Automatic AC. Below the controls lies the 12v charging socket and USB Charger with a cubby space to place the phone. The font armrest is fold-able and gets some storage space below it. On the top we get a a panoramic sun roof and a sun-glass holder.
Moving to the rear we get some extra space due to long wheelbase. Three people can easily be seated as it is widest in segment. The rear seats are 60:40 splits with almost flat floor because it is FWD.
The boot space is at 257 litres and boot floor can be adjusted to get a flat floor when seat are folded down.
Safety
XUV3OO is overall safest car by an Indian manufacturer. It scored 16.7 points out of 17 for adult safety. We can get up to 7 airbags(First in segment) with dual front airbags standard across the range. ABS with EBD and Corner braking control standard for all variants. Another class leading feature is the All-four disc brakes, it enhances the braking reducing the braking distance. First in segment front and rear parking sensors with adaptive guidelines. First in segment heated ORVMs to remove the foggy effect which decreases the visibility. Tire Pressure Monitoring System which displays real time pressure and temperature of the tires. Three point seat-belts for all passengers with individual reminder. These first in class safety features make XUV the car to be considered.Features
