  Introduction

Tata Altroz is a premium subcompact B-class hatchback launched by Tata Motors in Jan 2020. Altroz is based on the new Alfa Arc platform and Tata's new Impact 2.0 design language debuts with Altroz. Altroz rivals with Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Hyundai i20, Ford Figo,Volkswagon Polo, Toyota Glanza and Maruti Suzuki Swift. Let's discuss in detail Tata's new offering in the new segment.

  Engine & Performance

1.5 L Revotron Engine

Tata Altroz is powered by a Revotron and a Revotorq engine. 1.2L Revotron is a 1199cc inline 3-cylinder, DOHC, BS-VI compliant petrol engine. It churns out 85 bhp of max power at 6000 rpm and a peak torque of 113 Nm at 3300 rpm. The 1.5L Revotorq engine is a 1497cc inline 4-cylinder, DOHC, turbocharged, BS-VI compliant diesel engine. It produces max power of 89 bhp at 4000 rpm and 200Nm of max torque at 1250 rpm. Unfortunately, this engine is only mated to a 5-speed manual transmission, and there is no automatic variant on sale at least for now. Who knows Tata may introduce it later. Tata and Ford are the only two cars which get diesel engine as an option, rest the competition offers only petrol engines.

  Exterior Design

Tata Altroz gets a new design altogether. It is designed considering the new Impact 2.0 design language. Rest of the cars in Tata stable will also be updated with this new design language and create a family look. Starting with the front, we get a new sharp bonett, below it lies new front grille with piano-black finished thick line on the upper part and honeycomb mesh below it. Tata logo sits in the centre, and the grill is slightly tilted backwards. There is a chrome strip running across the front from left tom right headlamp. The headlamp is new and called dual-chamber headlamps. It consists of a projector on the outside and halogen bulb in the inner chamber and then houses the turn signal indicator near the grill. The dual-chamber headlamps have a floating back design. Lower down we get a sharp bumper which houses a halogen fog lamp and LED DRL around it. The wheel arches jut outside and give it a muscular widebody feel.

On the side of the car, new laser cut 16-inch dual-tone alloy wheels catch our attention. They look great and are offered only on higher trims. The lower trims get 14 inch and 16-inch steel wheels. There are various tire sizes as well, 165/80 R14, 195/55 R16 with steel wheels and 185/65 R16 with alloy wheels. We get piano black finished ORVMs with chrome inserts. The piano-black treatment continues under the window line and goes up to the C-pillar mounted rear door handle. The B-pillar is finished in matte black and roof is also finished in black to contrast.  The doors get some cuts and sharp lines as well.

Now, on the rear, we get a roof-mounted subtle rear spoiler finished in black. The upper boot lid is finished in black, the split tail lamps also bulge out, and they are smoked. The piano-black strip runs between the tail-lamps and houses Tata logo in the centre. Below lies the Altroz badging and then lid gets a deep cut. The bumper is muscular with only a few sharp lines.

  Interior

The interior of Tata Altroz is according to the new Impact 2.0 design language, and the rest of the Tata cars will also be updated. We are welcomed by a new leather-wrapped 3-spoke flat-bottom steering with mounted controls. It gets cruise control buttons on the steering wheel. The new instrument cluster is a part-analogue part-digital unit. It is a 7 inch TFT colour display for MID and Tachometer and an analogue speedometer on its right. The tell-tale lights are placed on the bottom of the screen.
In the centre of the dashboard we get a floating 7-inch infotainment display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The infotainment can be mirrored on the cluster for the ease of driver. There is also a wearable key for Altroz. The dashboard receives a satin chrome finish, and the AC vents have chrome borders. It gets a cooled glovebox and a leather-wrapped gear knob. There is a sliding armrest for the driver with internal storage.

The rear AC vents are placed on the back of armrest with a 12v power outlet. The rear seats are spacious, and we get a flat floor. The door handles are metallic finished. The rear seats get an armrest but no cup holders, Tata says that there are 24 cabin utility spaces. It gets a 345 Litres of boot space. The interior gets a blue ambient lighting for added premiumness.

  Safety

Tata Motors are always concerned about the safety in their cars, and like other cars, Altroz gets a five out of five stars at Global NCAP crash test. The Alfa Arc platform provides a rigid chassis to the vehicle. It gets front two airbags as standard across the range. ABS and EBD are also standard, which ensures enough grip during panic braking. Corner stability control features help to manoeuvre the car confidently around the corners. Child seat Isofix mounts and proper 3 point seat belts for all passengers are also offered. The front seatbelt is height adjustable. It gets a reverse parking camera with rear parking sensor and park assist feature.
