Introduction
Skoda Rapid is a compact size sedan (B-segment) was introduced in November 2011, and it was exclusively made for India. Skoda comes under Volkswagen group and Rapid is the Skoda's version of VW Vento. It is based on the VW platform. Amidst of the lock-down, this is Skoda's third launch in Indian market. Rapid has been updated to meet the BS6 norms. It is the cheapest Skoda we can buy and it is the most selling Skoda too. Let's see the Rapid in detail.
Engine & Transmission
1.0 L TSI engine |
As we all know VW group circulates a similar engine in a group of cars, this one is not an exception. Earlier it was powered by 1.5 TDI turbo diesel engine and 1.6 MPI petrol engine. But now it is powered by an all new 1.0 L TSI engine. It is a 999cc inline-3, turbo-charged, DOHC, BS-VI compliant petrol engine and produces 109 bhp at 5000 rpm and 175 Nm of torque at 1750 rpm. This engine is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission and there is no Automatic option. Earlier both petrol and diesel had manual and automatic gearbox. This engine is also shared with Volkswagen Polo and Vento, it is available in automatic gearbox in the VW but not with the Rapid. The engine is the only or rather the main change in the update.
Exteriors
The design of the Rapid has remain unchanged since its launch, it got minor face lifts and the car has aged well. On the front we get the signature Skoda grille with vertical bars. On the side of the grill we have Xenon projector headlamp with LED DRLs placed lower in the headlamp unit. Lower on the bumper we have a honeycomb mesh grille for radiator to cool down and on the sides, lies halogen fog lamps.
Coming to side of the car, the B pillars are finished in Piano black and the ORVM too in the dual tone finish. The design of the wheel is also altered however they size is still 16 inches. They come with a 195/55 R16 tubeless tires. And for base Rider variant, we get 15 inch steel rims with 185/60 R15 tires. Rapid is provided with a 116mm ground clearance. The rear is identical to the older model and nothing have changed here. We get smoked C-shaped tail lamps and some garnish on the boot lid.
Interior
As the case of the exteriors, Skoda hasn't updated the interior too. We still get the same flatbottom steering wheel, the dashboard design has also seen on other VW cars. Only the infotainment screen has given an update. It is now an 8 inch touch-screen unit, based on Android, but we do not get any Android Auto or Apple CarPlay connectivity. It is not slickest screen out there. The centre armrest gets a cubby space below it and there is an AC vent placed for rear passengers. The seats are good as before. We also gets a red stitching and red seat covers in the Monte Carlo variant.
Safety
Rapid is equipped with dual front air bags as standard. It gets ABS with EBD and Brake Assist to keep the vehicle under control during panic braking, these are also standard features. We get iso-fix child seat anchor points and child safety lock. The front two power windows are equipped with anti pinch function.
