After unveiling the all new Thar on our Independence Day, Mahindra has launched in October 2, 2020 and we are here for our first look review. Previous gen Thar has aged and we deserved something better and modern but more capable and practical car. Mahindra has tried to tick all the boxes we need in a legendary car like Thar. Mahindra Thar price is so accessible and is well justified.

Starting by its looks, its a looker car, one cannot ignore. It has got that road presence. The Thar has grown in size, its longer, wider and taller than previous gen. The front gets a Wrangler inspired look. It has retained the round headlamps. Instead of bulging out of body now they are kind of engraved in it. We still get the hood latches but these one have been re-engineered. On the protruding wheel arches we get LED DRL along with turn indicators mounted. The grill is kind of a miss and feels weak in design. Lower down we get a dual-tone black plastic bumper with halogen fog lamps mounted.
Coming to the side and its unmistakenly a Thar, gets front square and round rear wheel arches, a two door body design. The doors also gets the same rugged exposed door hinges to give a sturdy and robust feel. It gets optional Soft top and a hard top, it depends on the trim you are opting for. For added styling, it gets five dual spokes 17-inch alloy wheels or 16 inch steel wheels.

On the rear Thar continues its charm, it gets rectangular tail lamps where the brake light is LED. It has retained the similar mechanism for the boor door but now also gets glass window which opens separately. The spare alloy wheel is mounted on the tail-gate.

The interior of the previous gen was just so basic and was ok for the soft roader but it was something which was stopping buyers to buy it. Mahindra has done a great job, the interior is too a complete overhaul. We get nice steering wheel with mounted controls. We get analog digital instrument cluster with tons of information, an 8 -inch multimedia display. Automatic climate control Air conditioners, good firm supporting seats. For the rear seats we now have option for front or side facing seats depends on variant. From the inside it's like any other modern SUV but more capable. The interiors are washable and electronics are drizzle resistant.

The powertrains, Mahindra Thar gets two engine options: mStallion 150 and mHawk 130. The mStallion is a 1999cc, four cylinder inline turbo petrol engine. It produces 150 bhp at 5000rpm and 300Nm at 1250 Nm. The mHawk 130 is a 2253cc inline-4 turbo diesel engine. It produces 130 bhp at3750 rpm and 300Nm at 1600 rpm. These engines are of course BSVI compliant. We are surprised to see petrol engine putting out exact torque that of diesel engine. We have a six speed manual and a torque converter Automatic for both engines. And its gets 4WD for all variants with a differential gearbox.

Colours and variants, we have two trims: AX and LX. AX is for adventure and LX is more about lifestyle. In AX we get 16 inch steel wheels, manual transmission, hard top only for diesel.
In LX we get 17 inch alloy wheels, Automatic and manual transmission, hard top and soft top except for petrol manual
For AX we get only Red Rage and Napoli black colour options, while on LX we get six colour options:
  • Red Rage
  • Mystic Copper
  • Galaxy Grey
  •  Napoli black
  • Rock Beige
  • Aquamarine
