Yamaha FZ 250 || Affordable 250cc motorcycle in India || Review

Yamaha FZ25

   Overview

It have been around 3 years when Yamaha Motor India launched the  yamaha fz 250 in Indian market in December, 2016. The launch event was successful and all  of us were overwhelmed on the announcement of price figures. FZ25  is a commuter street fighter motorcycle. It is successor to the original 'Lord of Streets' FZ-S. Following are details of the motorcycle

   Engine

Engine
yamaha fz 250  is powered by a single cylinder oil-cooled 249cc engine. The engine is a 2-valve SOHC unit. The engine produces 21bhp @ 8000 rpm and a class leading torque of 20 Nm as low as 6000 rpms. The fueling is taken care by EFI system offered by Yamaha.

The engine is mated to a five speed transmission which is a bit disappointing but as it is a street fighter and the torque doesn't let you fell the lack of sixth gear unless you are on highway. The clutch is a multi-plate wet type and feels light to operate. The gearbox is slick but it has only one problem that is the coin rattling sound which comes after few thousand kms on odo and around 5k rpm.

The oil cooler surprises as it keeps the motorcycle temperature controlled even after continuous ride and even in summers. The engine is quite refined but just a bit lower than Yamaha's standards. The punchy performance from this engine overshadows almost all the problems.

   Design and Ergonomics

Speedometer
It is undoubtedly a true street fighter. It features a small bikini faring around the LED headlamp .Above this is a small auxiliary halogen lamp. The design is followed by a muscular tank with tank shrouds. The tank is well sculpted and you can grip with your knees comfortably.Foot-pegs are centre-set and handle bar is straight but a few mm lower than FZS v2.

The seat height is a perfect at 795 mm which allows shorter rider to gain confidence. this low seat height also helps in maintaining low centre of gravity means the bike will be planted well on the roads. One plus point of this bike is that it just weighs 142 kgs dry being lightest in class.its younger sibling is just 6 kgs lighter. Now just imagine the performance from this motorcycle...The rider sit upright and is comfortable position to commute through city traffics and even some long highway cruising. . The seat setup is split seat and pillion sit a little higher than rider. The seat comfort of pillion seat is also good and pillion will not feel tiring even for long rides.

The motorcycle features new and updated instrument cluster than FZs v2, now it gets clock and even shows avg. fuel economy. The midship mufflers is short and even sounds bassy.

   Braking and suspension

Yamaha FZ25 is equipped with dual disc brakes assisted by dual channel ABS. Front disc is 282 mm and braking is done by dual piston Bybre calipers. The rear disc measures 220 mm in dia and the rear caliper is single piston one. Front brake of the motorcycle is quite good with good bite and feedback. The braking capability is good. The rear brake lacks initial bite and used to end up locking in previous model but with ABS braking problem has resolved and now there nothing to ask for.
Suspension duties are taken care by fatter 43 mm front conventional forks and a rear mono-cross suspension setup. The motorcycle is built around the same  chassis with extra rigidity and strength than FZS. Motorcycle measures 2015 mm in length ,770 mm in width and supports a short wheelbase of 1360 mm.The motorcycle is quite compact.

   Handling

Undoubtedly being a Yamaha and from FZ series this motorcycles handles really well. The handlebar is positioned correct and you don't have to lean to reach it.The motorcycle features fat 100/80-17 front tyre and a fat 140/70-17 rear tyre. Yamaha was the first one to bring 140 section in commuters with FZ. This fat tyre always makes sure that you are glued to the road and can do some corners. The main difficulty while cornering is its softer suspension. But these softer suspension offer a plush city ride on Indian roads. The motorcycle is ideal for Indian roads. The punchy engine, softer suspension make it just perfect.

   Final verdict

For the conclusion I would say that this is motorcycle is nice one will torqy 250cc engine, plush suspension, on point fueling, throttle response is good, Japanese reliability, dual channel ABS and not to forget a descent fuel economy of 30-35 kmpl all what you need. And to surprise all this at just Rs. 1.34 lakhs Ex showroom. But now some knit-picking, the motorcycle doesn't have typical Yamaha bullet-proof reliability, there is some noise issue with engine and then the parts used are not of much good quality. The switch gear feels cheap and the exhaust pipe gets rusted easily. To prevent that you must paint it as the rust is visible. I feel that instrument panel is smaller.

If you are MotoGP fan then this bike is also available in Yamaha MotoGP edition which just cost 2500/- more

But hey, the issues are less and the pros are more if these issues doesn't bothers you then this is the perfect motorcycle for you.Just go for it. you ain't getting a steal deal at this price other than this one.
