Mahindra has launched the successor to it mid size SUV, they have named it XUV 700. This is the new gen XUV loaded with features and power. XUV 500was first launched in 2012 and since then we only saw facelift and not a new generation. Market has evolved and XUV 500 is lacking a bit behind in terms of features. Mahindra has decided to launch a new gen and they have absolutely nailed it. XUV 700 comes in 5-seater as well as 7-seater layout. So now XUV 700 competes with Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Skoda Kushaq, VW Taigun, Tata Harrier, MG Hector, Jeep Compass, Hyundai Alcazar, Tata Safari, MG Hector Plus and similar cars. Let's see what is Mahindra's answer to all these cars.
Engine & Gearbox
Mahindra Engineers has excellently nailed this. XUV is available in two engine options: a 2.0L mStallion Turbo GDi and a 2.2 mHawk Diesel Engine. The 1999cc inline-4 ,petrol mStallion produces 200Ps of max power and 380Nm torque. This is the same engine powering the Thar but in a different sate of tune. The 2.2 litre mHawk Diesel engine is available in two tune options, it produces 155 Ps and 360Nm in lower variant and 185Ps and 420Nm with manual gearbox and segment above 450Nm in Automatic variants. 6-speed manual gearbox and 6-speed Torque Converter Automatic gearbox are on offer. The power is channeled to front wheel and we get a top-spec AWD as an option for enthusiasts. XUV 700 gets four riding modes : Zip, Zap, Zoom and Custom. Zip is designed to easily and comfortable zip in through traffic. Zap is a little powerful, Zoom mode for zooming out other cars on highway and Custom can be tailored as per our needs.
Exteriors
Design has been evolved out of XUV 500. It draws the relation from its predecessor and has transformed into more modern and sophisticated design. On the front XUV 700 gets a bigger six slat signature Mahindra grill. In the centre it gets new Butterfly style Mahindra logo, grill is finished in Gloss black and slats in silver. On sides, we get Clear View LED Headlamps along with C-shaped LED DRLs. I love the way that the last slats of the grill merges in to DRLs. LED indicators get sequential lighting function. Lower we get black plastic airdam which houses LED fog lamps and on the sides there are functional air-curtains to cool the wheels and brake discs. Though we get a fake silver skid plate.
Coming to the sides and silhouette is very similar to the 500. The main highlight on the sides are flush door handles, these are smart handles in optional pack while manual in rest others. Smart handles pop out as you unlock the car. Window frames are in gloss black making the B, C and D-Pillar black, Chrome runs under the window line. XUV 700 gets silver roof rails and biggest sunroof in segment trademarked as SkyRoof. Dual tone ORVM with LED indicators, Adrenox badge on front fenders of AX variants and thin black plastic cladding runs all around under the car. On top spec XUV we'll get 18 inch, ten-spoke, diamond-cut, dual tone alloys wheels with 235/60 tyres, on a lower variant we'll get 17 inch, dual-tone diamond cut alloys wheels and on more lower variants, we'll get 16 inch steel wheels.
On the rear we get a top mounted spoiler with HMSL. Spoiler has been neatly integrated. Then, we have Arrow head design LED tail lights. The boot lid gets very sharps cuts and corners and hence Mahindra decided to go with fibre tail gate. The new Mahindra logo kind of looks an after thought. Lower we get, reflectors, fog lamp and a silver skid plate.
Interiors
Mahindra XUV700 looks very premium on the inside. As we open the door, electric sdjustable driver seat slides backward for easy ingress and coming out, then gets back to its set position. It is six way power adjustable and gets upto three memory function. We get a new flat-bottom three spoke steering wheel, it is adjustable for both reach and rake, gets silver and piano black inserts. Overall, the interior gets a light theme. There are two 10.25 inch screens in a single frame, one functions as instrument cluster while other is touch responsive and functions as infotainment screen. It gets Apple Car Play, Android Auto wireless connectivity and Alexa built in, more over we get Adrenox Connected car tech. We can get upto 12 SONY speaker system for next level audio experience.
Dashboard gets hard plastic on top, soft touch leather in between and hard lower down. Below the leather material we get silver finish which houses the AC vents and start stop button. AC vents get chrome surrounds as well. In the centre console it gets controls for dual zone climate control, some physical button lower down and power and USB ports. The gear lever gets leather wrapped boot, some variants are available with Electronic Parking Brake and Auto Hold function.
The seats are white leatherette with perforated leather, however no ventilation feature here. The centre arm-rest gets sliding function and has storage space underneath. On the back side it mounts AC vents for rear passengers and USB sockets. Rear seats gets two adjustable and one fixed headrest. It gets centre armrest with vertically placed cup holders. The co-passenger seat get a lever on the back, with that rear passenger can slide it front and enjoy Boss level of leg space. XUV 700 is available in 5-seater and 7-seater layout. The last row are very uncomfortable, but gets AC vents and adjustable headrests.
